between British state schools and elitist fee-charging schools.For years, Eton was considered an icon of upper-class privilege,reinforcing economic inequalities in society.The resentment ran so deep that Old Etonians,as graduates are known,were often scorned by graduates of state schools.As a result,many Old Etonians have been,unsurprisingly, circumspect about bragging of their education.They have also learned that today the most coveted positions and salaries go to those who achieve success,as opposed to those who are born into wealth and power.The global economy has effectively become the great equalizer. “I tell the boys that30 percent of them are going to work for a Chinese or Indian company,”says Eton instructor Liam Maxwell“They're going to be judged on what they are and can do,not where they came from.Being an Old Etonian won't be that relevant”
