Consider the luck of the small agricultural town of Tunica,,Mississippi.In1990,the town was economically depressed,suffering from high unemployment,low wages,and a declining population. One business,though,had its eye on the town.The business was Splash,a casino that,along with other casinos that followed close on its heels,proceeded to( 26 ).The gambling industry hired a sizable workforce and ultimately generated considerable tax revenue for the1ocalgovemment.As a result,the local government has been able to slash personal taxes while investing in infrastructure such as educational facilities and a new airport.Unemp1oyment has been halved,and average incomes have steadily risen.For their part,the casinos in Tunica have created the largest gambling market in the Southeastern United States,with 12 million annual visitors.
