Ghana's Timber Industry
One pressing issue in Ghana today is safeguarding the future of
its timber industry.As in several other West African countries,timber exports are an essential source of foreign revenue in Ghana.The continuing devastation of forests by unlawful chainsaw gangs,however, coupled with a failure to curb the sale of illegal timber abroad,has begun to( 29 ).Eco-conscious buyers are increasingly reluctant to buy what might be illegally harvested timber,and Ghana's government risks losing vital markets unless more rigorous oversight is adopted.Growing fears among overseas buyers that they were purchasing illegal timber caused Ghanaian wood exports to the European Union to fall by20 percent between2004 and 2007.
