Spinach Industry l'n a Spin
In September2006,contaminated spinach from California's
Salinas Valley found its way into the U.S. consumer market.Carrying a dangerous strain of bacteria that was introduced by contact with animal waste run-off from an adjacent cattle operation,the food sickened over200 people and ultimately resulted in three deaths.The incident outraged customers,forced retailers to suspend sales of spinach,and has since cost producers at least$100 million in direct income.
Producers of other greens in the Salinas Valley,who have for
the last half-century considered their valley“America's Salad Bowl,”( 26 ).That does not surprise William E.Rice,a marketing professor at California State University.He says that such reports of sickness and death put“something in people's minds that's very hard to overcome”When items get pulled off the shelves because of disease, the wider industry will,as Rice puts it,“hurt in the long term”Experts are now evaluating the outbreak's repercussions on consumer attitudes to spinach and the long-term demand for greens in general.
